Thank you Krisann K. Rehbein from the Chicago Architecture Foundation. Chicago Architectural Foundation hired ALL of the students they interviewed that day at the CBA Junior Jobfair on June 25, 2011 as part of our CPS/CAF summer program. The students received an orientation on Tuesday and it went very well. They started work on Monday, July 11.

It is great to have the opportunity to connect both the tour program and the work we do with teens. Perhaps next year, we can apply to do a jobs program in partnership out in Chatham!

Job Fair FAQ's

How many students attended the fair?

The CBA Juniors Youth Program was divided into two parts: the Workshop and the Job Fair. The Workshop was held at the Chatham Ice Theater on June 18, 2011 where the attendees were given a three hour preparatory course consisting of power point presentations from employers and their expectation, one-one interview techniques, skills assessment, and workplace attire. In total, 115 students initially registered, 66 students attended the mandatory job readiness Workshops, prepared their resumes; a final count of 45 students completed the workshops and were permitted to attended the Job Fair that was hosted on June 25, 2011 at Chatham Ice Theater.

What happened during the fair?

During the Job Fair, students were given a 20 minute preparatory and agenda for the Job Fair. Afterwards, the students were released in the west hall of the theater where they were met by 12 different companies awaiting their resumes and personal objectives concerning career options. Each student met with all the companies including: Chicago Area Project, Nike Shoe Store, Jewel-Osco, SCR, Chicago Architecture Foundation, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Essential Creations, Illinois Department of Employment Services, East-West University, Student Financial Services, and World of Fashion and Accessories. Several of the companies interviewed several students extensively by taking them into open theater areas for a one-on-one interview, especially the Chicago Area Project who interviewed and will follow up with a majority of the different students.   Jewel’s representative also stated they would follow-up with each of the students they met at the Jobfair.

The Nike representative stated she was very impressed with “quality of the resumes” of the CBA Juniors.  After the activity, students were given snacks such as donuts and orange juice. CBA will follow up with each student to ensure that all students received the attention and opportunity for employment and/or skill assessments.

Did the students seem eager to engage with employers?

The students were initially nervous about speaking one-on-one with the employers but the job preparation eased their discomfort, and with the support of CBA staff each student delved into the job fair without fear or nervousness and stayed persistent in their search for the employment opportunity and possible career placement.

What was the job fair's purpose?

The purpose of the Workshop and Job Fair is to prepare the youth for employment and career placement. The concept of the Job Fair is to remove any and every obstacle that could possibly hinder the urban youth from reaching their goals and dreams. The CBA Youth Program provides mentorship for local area youths, and to ensure that every youth that participate in this program will have an equal chance to succeed.

Did many students receive job leads?

Many of the students received employment leads from all companies.

CBA would like to say a very special thank you to our Employer vendors and appreciate their commitment to mentor our community youth through providing employment opportunities.  CBA Interns, Ashley Chrisman and Abraham David Lacy did an excellent job to ensure that the CBA Junior Job Readiness Workshops and Jobfair was a success.
